Master
Chorale of South Florida to
Perform “New” Version of Mozart’s Mass in
C minor
It may not be possible to improve on Mozart, but it is possible
to complete something he never finished. Mozart began his Mass
in C minor (K. 427) on or before 1782, but for unknown reasons,
never completed it. He left the scoring for certain instruments
blank in several sections, and he only sketched his ideas for
other sections.
Musicologist
and Mozart scholar Robert D. Levin picked up where Mozart left
off and completed the mass in 2004. Levin added appropriate
instrumentation and reconstructed entire sections from Mozart’s
notes to make the Mass liturgically complete. The Master Chorale
of South Florida will perform this new version, 25 minutes longer
than the familiar version, with the Boca Raton Philharmonic
Symphonia and soloists on March 31, April 1 and April 2, 2006.
Following its U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall in January 2005, the
Master Chorale performances of the new version will be among
the first in the U.S – and the very first in South Florida.
The Levin version has already taken Europe by storm, with its
place in the classical repertoire to be secured by a performance
at the Salzburg Festival on August 30, 2006.
Don’t
miss this rare opportunity to hear for the first time, a magnificent
and fascinating work that clearly illustrates the breadth and
depth of Mozart’s talent for writing vocal and instrumental
music. The Robert D. Levin version of Mozart’s Mass in
C minor will be performed on Friday, March 31, 2006, at 8:00
pm in Boca Raton at the Roberts Theatre at Andrews Hall, The
Center for Performing Arts, St. Andrews School; on Saturday,
April 1, at 8:00 pm in Fort Lauderdale at Second Presbyterian
Church; and on Sunday, April 2, at 3:00 pm in Miami at Trinity
Episcopal Cathedral. Directions to these venues may be found
on our website, www.masterchoraleofsouthflorida.org.
Tickets
are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Advance tickets may be
